In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
What is IVF?
In Vitro Fertilization is an advanced fertility treatment that helps couples achieve pregnancy when natural conception becomes difficult. In IVF, the egg and sperm are fertilized outside the body in a specialized laboratory, and the resulting embryo is then transferred into the uterus.
Who May Need IVF?
IVF may be recommended for :
- Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- Low sperm count or male infertility
- Irregular ovulation or PCOS
- Endometriosis
- Unexplained infertility
- Advanced maternal age
- Recurrent pregnancy loss
- Couples who have failed simpler fertility treatments
- Fertility preservation before cancer treatment
Steps Involved in IVF Treatment
1. Fertility Assessment
Initial consultation includes :
- Medical history evaluation
- Hormonal testing
- Ultrasound scan
- Semen analysis
3. Egg Retrieval
Eggs are collected through a minor procedure performed under sedation.
4. Fertilization
The eggs are fertilized with sperm in the IVF laboratory. In selected cases, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) may be used.
5. Embryo Culture
Embryos are monitored carefully for several days in advanced incubators.
6. Embryo Transfer
A healthy embryo is gently transferred into the uterus using a simple and painless procedure.
7. Pregnancy Test
A blood test is performed around 10–14 days after embryo transfer to confirm pregnancy.
